Virtual Care (VC)

The SMA recognizes the pressures that a public health outbreak puts on physician practices and the health care system. In the current situation physicians' office practices and delivery of care is significantly impacted. The health system across the country is exploring innovative ways for providing patient care with minimal risk. Virtual care is one important way you can continue to care for your patients remotely, while keeping your patients, yourself and staff safe. Choose tools that work well for you and your patient and provide a secure platform.

A variety of virtual care options are available for physicians and clinicians who cannot be present to provide care in person, and the SMA EMR team is here to support clinics in the transition. Virtual care may be provided by telephone, email, secure messaging and video.

The CMA has written a virtual care playbook and made it available to all Canadian physicians. The purpose of the playbook is to introduce virtual patient encounters (telemedicine) into their daily practices. It is intended to be a virtual care platform and vendor agnostic. It focuses on video visits, though phone calls and patient messaging are also categorized as virtual care. While not exhaustive, the playbook covers all key considerations to succeed at providing safe, effective and efficient care.
